CSIRO is Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation. It is one of the world's largest and most diverse scientific global research organisations. The work carried out touches every aspect of Australian life: from the molecules that build life to the molecules in space. Beginning as the Advisory Council of Science and Industry in 1916, the CSIRO now comprises many sites across the nation and around the globe, employing over 6,500 staff. It is focused on providing new ways to improve quality of life and the economic and social performance of a number of industry sectors through research and development. These sectors include agribusiness, energy and transport, environment and natural resources, health, information, communication and services, manufacturing, and mineral resources.
